Tax preparation ≠ Tax planning
Shh.
Don’t tell anyone…
I want to let you in on something.
It’s a little bit dirty, icky, and scandalous.
But here’s the thing—there’s so much confusion about what tax accountants really do.
I spoke with several self-employed small business owners this week who thought their tax preparer was also making sure they were paying as little as possible in taxes.
Wrong!
Very few CPAs actually understand tax planning.
They’re often just plugging the numbers you give them into a tax return—without thinking strategically about how much you’re paying or how to help you save.
In fact, I’ll go out on a limb and guess your CPA has probably said something like:
“You’re paying so much in tax because your business is doing great! It’s a good thing.”
What a joke.
The truth is—tax preparation ≠ tax planning.
The tax laws are massive and complicated. It takes laser-focused training and real strategy to know the legal ways to shift income and reduce tax liability.
That kind of knowledge doesn’t just happen by accident. It takes years of study, hands-on experience, and tens of thousands of dollars in education to master.
So, if you’re not sure whether you’ve ever gone through a formal tax plan… chances are, you haven’t.
And that means you’re likely overpaying in taxes.
Let’s fix that.
